2 things folks didnt catch from this Alicia Keys on the beach video

1. Thats her mom in the video
2. They are in Dubai, which she says, but I find it interesting because Swizz Beats is best friends with THE Prince (there are a lot!) of Dubai. Not only are they friends but the Prince is the Godfather to Swizz's son.

Oh and on a side note. Ive only been to Dubai once and for a short time. But when I looked around it was so much work that was being done. A lot of construction. I was expecting something different although a place with only 5 STAR hotels defintely aint the slums. I just thought about that as I was watchin the video because you can see the construction in the background....

Oh Michael I miss you so much and this video doesnt make things better...

Thank you Spike for your vision though...beautiful

Sooo I know its the holidays and all, but real quick about that new Kanye video

So some of us know that some new video has surfaced of Kanye. It looks like he stopped by a Kid Cudi show. The interesting part for me was what he says in the beginning. He talks about how he needed to take a break and h0w artists are scared of really speaking their mind. And ya know I think he may have something. I know what youre thinking, "there goes Laiya on her Kanye soapbox", but no think about it. I mean at the end of the day is Taylor Swift really capable of having a better album then Beyonce? Not that I approve of his approach, but its something to think about. Oh and PS ummmm Amber's not white (gotta watch the video to know what Im talkin bout, shes Cape Verdian and some other stuff lol).

Awww some good new music for your listening pleasure...

I stumbled upon RJD2 a few years during my quick stint away from radio when I was working at Rykodisc. I was the office manager and one of the highlights of sitting at a desk all day is that you kind find all sorts of things online. Along with the fact it was an indie label/publishing /distribution company with a large catalogue and it was fun to explore new things. Of course my passion is music and I was also around all day....Annnnyyyway I really messed with RJD2's stuff as a producer. Enough that when I hear his name I stop to listen and I am rean really this one featuring Kenna

"As the World Turns" CANCELED...Where's my mommy????!!!

Ok this is too much, first they cancel "Guiding Light", which was part of the original line up of soap operas that I was raised on. Yes, RAISED on. My mom is reading this, I'm sure, so she can attest to the fact that I grew up with "The Young & The Restless", "As the World Turns" and "Guiding Light" ("The Bold and The Beautiful" came years later) in the background of my life. From being home for a sick day to having a break in between classes, to having a break in between jobs, I kept up in some sort of way with my "stories". This article below gives detail about the plethora of celebrities that were bread from "As the World Turns" from Meg Ryan to the not even mentioned, Lauryn Hill (yes!). Anyway, although it seems petty to some, it is definitely the end of an Era! 54 years! As the world turns.....

I mean come on!

A princess graces the cover of Essence...

Anika makes her mark on American History!

And one of my favortie girls gets a new look...Hey Drew!

Ahhhh one reason the Grammys are gonna be cool this year...Best Rap Solo Category!!

Ok so yeah yeah Beyonce has 10 nominations and of course Taylor Swift has 8 with ALL she's been through lol, but whats more exciting is
MOS DEF is NOMINATED FOR A GRAMMY and although its a reach that he will win against the commercial hip hop whores like Drake and Jay-Z. For once the category feels "right" and makes sense. So to Drake, Eminem, Jay-Z, Kid Cudi (yay) and Mos Def I say, "Cheers!". Oh and congrats to Maxwell too, who is nominated, WHAT A COMEBACK!?!?

Strange things i found on the internet....

Ok so Im at work (oh yeah if you havent heard I am the latest addition to WPGC, 95.5 in DC ;-) and im cruising the internet and i find some rather interesting stories and pics, for instance...

So evidentally Hulk Hogan had a wrestling match with Rick Flair in Austraila, but it seems as though the press conference before the match got a little out of hand. I mean Look at the Hulkster! Not Cool dude. First of all hes almost 60 and the story kept say how Rick kept hitting the Hulkster in the head! Come on Rick Flair! Yall are men of a certain age and let me mention that Hulk didnt look too good after the match either, but he did WIN! Hulk-a-mainia BABY!

Now on to the next strange thing i found. So when are we gonna acknowledge that Fabolous's lips are the sexy big ki
nd? I mean if this picture doesnt prove it what does? He messin up my girl Amber's pic!
Then there's Miss Gay Brazil....So yes it is a real beauty pagent with REAL sore loosers. This is the MOST wrong thing to do as a loser at a pagent lol...NOT THE WIG! Take a look

And on the interesting tip, how about this one...

Judge Rules Hurricane Katrina is the GOVERNMENT'S fault!

And seriously Dennis. Another run in with the beaty bee pubic hair?????

2 reasons why You should love "The Monique Show"

1. Because she reunited one of my favorite casts, "The Game"....uh yeah!

Oh reason 1.5
Because in this next clip Monique manages to address the actress that plays, "Kelly" in a way that most of us "Game" fans have only thought of...

And Wendy Robinson breaks down what she does for the children....

2. Tonight she brings together the cast of "Precious" (a movie I thoroughly plan to see when I get my funds straight lol)

Tyra brings the sista girl out of Halle Berry, lol

Ok so while it doesnt happen the WHOLE interview, I can appreciate Tyra and her interviews. At first glance when she teases her upcoming segment with "Berryisms" ie. Halle "Scary"you kinda of have an Oprahesque crenge going on, but after commercials when Tyra asks Halle what scares her and whats her favorite cuss word, you appreciate Tyra for asking the questions you may not have known you wanted to ask. Alls Im sayin is dont be hatin on my girl Tyra. There is a place for her lol. Check out her Halle Berry interview oh and watch Halle remind you of someone you know when Tyra asks her about the cuss word. HILARIOUS

Sammy Sosa and his theories....whatever....

So of course you know by now that Sammy Sosa popped up at an event last week looking like this! Huuuummm

Now here's the problem sources close to Sosa say he has be going under some kind of skin rejuvenation and the funny part is in the story the source says that its some process that "Women do all the time" uhhhhh huh? And then when you really start to look closer at the photo are those green contacts!?!?!? Did the skin rejuvenation do that? And lets not even talk about the hair? So lets stop tippy toeing around and call a spade a bleached spade! Its actually pretty sad. I watched this interesting story about skin bleaching in Jamaica and how popular it is. I just thought it was so ironic that on the island where most go to get browner the natives want the opposite.

Check it out...man I sure do miss "Black is Beautiful"

Ahhhh finally a good week...well for me at least

So here's why..

#1 I gots a new job! More details to follow on that one, because you know I like to keep my folks updated!

#2 I saw "Good Hair" Monday at a special screening my girlfriend Syretta did. She owns the premiere natural hair care salon in Philly, Duafe. Anyway, we all watched the movie and then had a panel discussion about it, which was quite interesting. My godmother Dyana Williams (WRNB, 107.9) was apart of the panel as well as my girl Elizabeth Wellington from the Fashion Dept of the Philadelphia Daily News

and a few other heavily impressive ladies. Interesting documentary. I had a few thoughts and feelings. Like I had a moment of "dang when the good white folks watch this will they really learn more about us or laugh at us?". But I understand that in this Obama Nation in order to understand each other we have to learn about each other. So I got over that (kinda). I also wanted a little more in the history area (uh Madame CJ Walker anyone?), but again it was a great start and if it changes one woman's mind about putting that chemical in her 6 year old daughter's hair, I'm happy. Anyway, we had a nice discussion that led to the next day when Syretta invited me to come to her flagship store (shes got 2!) to have a continued discussion, but this one was filmed Fox29! Shout out to Berlinda and Mike Garrett of "Good Day Philadelphia" (who asked all the right questions!). It will air Monday, October 25 in the 9:00 hour, I believe.

Check out some of my behind the scene footage. Its short, but its Berlinda (producer of Good Day, Syretta and Mike!)

So after I left Duafe I moseyed on down or out to Jersey to see my homie D. McNabb and his fabulously plumb wife Roxy (its cool shes pregnant lol) donate a NICE amount to Virtual Hospital for their neo natal unit. And yes their name will be on the Building. It will be called, "The McNabb Family Neonatal Intensive Care Unit". For more details go HERE

Oh but here is my lil video that shows the picture of Don and Roxy that will be put up on the wall of the hospital.

So then later that evening (yeah it was a long day) I headed over to see my homie, sista, friend, mentor, and guru of radio, Helen Little (who by the way has been my boss on 3 different occassions lol) speak at the Arts Garage. Watch as she explains the difference between a "stalker" and a "researched stalker" lol, which most of us need to be. She starts telling a story about how she really wanted to meet the announcer for the Atlanta Hawks and how she made it happen. OH and how she had to get on the floor at Madison Square Garden to make it happen (not an easy task)

Thursday, October 15, 2009

Soooo uhhh anyone care about the Sex in the City sequel

Cuz if you dont thats uh cool, but ter ummm if you do...LOOK WHO HAS BEEN ADDED TO THE CAST!!!!

Talkin bout Good and Bad Hair...whether youre dark or your faaaair

God I love that movie, anyway speaking of good and bad hair. Im going to be doing a panel for a Screening on Monday which looks very interesting. My good friend Syretta Scott who is a ever growing entrepreneur asked me to participate and I am sooooo excited!!!! Syretta owns the show where I get my natural hair all done up!Shout out to one of my best girlfriends, Tia who does my hair. She's the only redbone in the video lol) .Its called Duafe and they were in the Philly Daily News yesterday talking about, "What is Good hair?" I love her answers and her style. Check it out!

Man its been a long week ey?

Of course first and foremost MY President and my favorite First Lady (and sista friend in my head)......How rude of me to FIRST not say Happy Anniversary Week!

And whoa Dr. King and President Obama have something in common ey? Wow the Nobel Peace Prize. I love how humble he is about accepting this prestigious award and rightfully so since he has not been in office for a year yet. But I believe like Obama believes that the award is less about President Obama but more about the effect that his campaign and life have had on the WORLD. After all for most, I believe, on the day he became President the World had a since of "peace" if not for a moment. And that feeling we felt drives us to know that better days are ahead. They have to be dont they? lol /-:

Now real quick, on the lighter side of things. Its Friday and it hasnt been the greatest week, for me at least. So when I turned on VH-1 Soul(during Wendy Williams commercials) It felt real good to stumble onto their "Underground Soul" hour. Sometimes I get so wrapped up in life that forget some of the simple things that make me feel good. Like GOOOOOD Music. Can we have a GOOOOOOD Music Moment? Ok Good!

So the first video that on is Deborah Bond.....

So as it was going off and Im about to change the channel...something happens to make me stop....its...its ...Foreign Exchange!

You know Phonte and Nicolay? Phonte from Little Brother!?! They met onlin on Okayplayer..Nicolay from Amsterdam, Phonte from Carolina...came together to make a group called "Foreign Exchange" with host of other talent? Made the first album ALL online without the 2 of them ever meeting in person!!? Anyway now you know! I Proudly say Phonte is one of my FAVORITE MC's and his singing voice is crazy!?!?! And Yazarah (Foreign Exchange mainstay) has a crazy voice too

So then I started to think about Yazarah (who I believe used to sing back up for Lauryn). And then I dug up this video of her showing off her chops WITH Deborah Bond and another singer, Allison Carney

And then I said let me check out one of my favorite NEW music site, Giantstep.net and what do you know? I find a NEW QTIP VIDEO! Man nuffin like a lil Q-Tip to brigthen my day! And its of my favorite songs of his albm "The Rennaissance"...."Life Is Better" with Norah Jones

Oh and can you beleive they let Q-tip on 106 and Park to show his new video!?!?! If ya missed it...

Then i found thislil ditty from this singer Joy Jones...Fuuuunky

Oh and speaking of former background singers, can we talk NDambi (former E. Badu backgroun singer)? Her latest album just came out. Check her out! Makes me miss my fro'

Here is my other fav N'Dambi song...

Oh and if you still have Giantstep.net open, go check out Bebel Gilberto's newest project. I swear if you close your eyes and listen to her it feels like youre in Brazil, ahhhhhh....

Oh and meanwhile in the land of Hip Hop we await "Hip Hop Honors" October 13th, but as usual the Roots never dissapoint. Here is a small piece of the show with Eminem and Black Thought

Eminem Eminem Video The Roots DJ Jazzy Jeff

Uh so maybe "Good Hair" did forget a couple of things..

Biggups to my sista Lauren who hipped me to this article on the things that lacked in Chris Rock's new documentary on Black hair (read Thursday's Blog). Its an interesting article that examines one question that wasnt asked in the movie, "WHY?". Check IT out

Ahhhh the things you can learn from Essence Magazine lo

So did you know that as I write there i a new version of "The Last Dragon" being worked on? YES! And I hear RZA is involved along with Barry Gordy's son. And get this Sam Jackson is playing SHONUFF!!! And yes Taimak will be involved! Check out words from Taimak as he begins to resurrect his career. I think it will begin with the TV One special, "Life After". Oh and hes still fine as wine! lol

Also speaking of Essence Magazine. So Im reading the latest issue and may I add Mary's 4th cover of the year (we will get to that in a second). I found this article on the cast of "The Cosby Show 25 Years later". Yes 25 years! I know, I feel old too! Anyway its on page 59 if u wanna cheat and read it in the grocery store line. But Mr. Cosby said something that caught my eye. The last question the writer ask is "The Cosby Show, Part 3?" And Mr Cosby says, "Nope I wont make another sitcom. Im waiting for BET and TV One o wake up. Make that be the last line." Huuuuuuum....so right

And another thing since we are talkin about Essence. Whats up with the 50 covers of Mary and Gabrielle Union!?!? Are there no more impressive Black female celebs? And uh is it me or has Gabrielle been the ONLY Dark sista that can stand alone on the Essence cover? Viola Davis hello? Somebody said to me the other day it hasnt been the same since Susan Taylor left and its so true. Not that I lost love for Essence, cuz i NEED my recipes lol, butttttt lets just make sure ALL our "t's" are crossed over there! And for those thinking that Serena was on the cover not to long ago, uh she shared that homie, remember? lol

And today's Throwback "Lesson" song of the day...

Oprah and Michelle Obama put the word down for Chicago!

and dammit it didnt work! lol

By the way although I love Brazil, its one of my favorite places to visit, Rio is not the place for the Olympics lol. I dont see anything coming out of that, but trouble. All those men from different countries trying to get a piece of what THEY think Brazil is famous for. Sound like some good set ups for robery and kidnapping. Like I was tellin a homie of mine who was saying you can get robbed in Chicago. THAT my friend is way different then the same happening in Brazil. Ive been there quite a few times and folks are HUNGRY in Brazil. They have different types of crime going on, lol. And then those who do consomate their trip, you gotta worry about them coming home and bringing something back with them. Seriously think about how our USA basketball team is gonna act when they step into Rio. Like kids in a candyshop, lol. Im telling you. Rio not the place lol. Also my mom just reminded me that Summer in Brazil is WINTER in Brazil lol. But let me also say do visit Brazil on your own it is a beautiful place filled with culture. Check the Archives for my pics from Salvdor Brazil if youre interested in going.

PS
Mr President sure did miss his wife while they were seperated....

Now thats good lovin!

Aww T-Pain you dont have to apologize

Wait Carol's Daughter teams up with Disney?

So i posted

Black-owned business Carol's Daughter has just become the official beauty product brand of Disney’s The Princess and The Frog," an effort to commemorate the studio's first African-American princess.
According to WWD, Carol's Daughter has signed a deal to create a new bath and body line inspired by Princess Tiana, who will make her movie introduction in limited release Nov. 25 (a full release is planned for Dec. 11).
"This is the first time I'll be able to take my daughter to a Disney movie where she'll see a princess with skin her color," said Carol's Daughter's chief executive officer and managing director Steve Stoute, speaking of his four-year-old daughter.
"African-American women have never been invited into the Disney experience — this is a major milestone for the Disney princess franchise," Stoute continued. "It will be very exciting to take my daughter to see the Ariel that looks like her, whose hair moves just like hers, and whose skin is beautifully brown and celebrated. And given Lisa's story, it is especially appropriate that Carol's Daughter is partnering with Disney for this project."
The collection will have four products, which will each retail for $10 and highlight a special lesson that Tiana learns during the movie. The products can be used by all women, but are especially formulated for African-American hair. The shampoo is made to care for fragile, dry hair, and contains aloe leaf juice. The conditioner also has aloe leaf juice, as well as sunflower seed and olive fruit oils to help detangle hair.
The line will launch this month and will be sold at Macy's, Dillard's and Carol's Daughter stores.

Where Ima be tonight

Ok so was I the only one that fell back in love with Oprah yesterday!?!?!

Ok first things first Chris Rock...THANK YOU! For what you say? For "Good Hair"

"If your hair is relaxed white people are relaxed. If your hair is nappy they are not happy" -Paul Mooney lol..

So on yesterday's Oprah she invited Chris and Solange on to talk about Black women and their hair.

An issue close to my heart or should I say a MAJOR issue in my life. Me being a natural girl and all. My hair has always been a determining factor from working out, to a job interview, and lets not forget sex lol. Anyway as I watched the show I just found myself getting a little emotional. I was so happy Oprah was embracing this topic and also that she brought her own story to the fold. Then when Chris started breaking down how conditioned us Black women are to have straight hair, when at the end of the day since so many women embrace this concept it doesn't make them look special. Watch as he explains what makes Solange and her new haircut special. And wait she had a perm at the age of 4!?!?!?

Oprah was gonna cut her hair off, but Bill Cosby didnt think it was a good idea lol...

Great Show auntie O

Just in!!! Photo's from the LA Screening....just some of the Black Female Celebrities featured in the documentary

Uh so have you seen Joe Jackson's other daughter?

I guess thats why they got nose jobs..joking..well kinda lol

Gospel Singer Tonex Comes Out ....Its a start!!

Now I hope this opens the closet door for all the good DL gospel dudes to come out...wait there aint a closet big enough is there? lol

Gospel Singer Tonex Comes Out on 'The Lexi Show'

Soooo did you know Jay-Z was on Oprah?? So wait does that mean Oprah has a new respect for Hip Hop!??!?!?

Man I wish they would have advertised this half as much as Whitney. I thought Oprah's trip to Marcy was strickly for the magazine, but as usual I was wrong lol. Very interesting considering we all know Oprah aint one for the Hip Hop (a fact I try to ignore considering my love for Oprah). But as I dive deeper into the relationship btw Oprah and Hip Hop now I have questions now that she has let Jay-Z on her stage, but still no ICE CUBE.
1. Why wasnt Jay-Z a part of her 2 part Hip Hop town hall meeting? for that matter where were the ladies on that show?

2. Does Jay-Z get a pass to come on her show because of Beyonce or Obama?

3. And has she really listened to his lyrics (cuz if she did would she still approve of him being on the showing seeing that shes supposed to be against most of the things he references!!?!)

4. Will she really dive into Jay-Z's old crack dealing/killing the Black community days

PS
Should a rapper like Jay who sold crack to the community now give back to that community? And not just Jay shouldnt that law be made to all rappers who boast about their crack dealing past?

Well to be fair they address about 1 and a half of my questions...

pt2

pt3

pt4

pps
If you have the time, compare Oprah's interview to Bill Mahr's. One thing I can say about the homie Bill is, at least he ASKS the quetions even if Jay one word answers them lol....next up Jay-Z the politician lol..

pt2

pt3

I dont know auntie O I think Bill may have done it better!

Happy Birthday Mommy!

Happy birthday Mommy! I know youre in Kuwait (offical flight attendant business! lol) but I love you and every year you get betta!

Having a Michael moment

I MISS HIM!!

Wait a white cop with cornrows!?!?

Ummmm is it wrong that Im not gonna stand up for his rights? lol Cant we have somethings for ourselves? And dont that hurt? You be the judge

White Philadelphia Police Officer Thomas Strain Told to Get Rid of Cornrows

Atlanta's underwater!?!?!?

My old stomping ground (AUC love!) is under water and 6 people so far have died? Pay attention and call loved ones. I spent 4 great years of my life there (Clark Atlanta University) and it hurts to see it like this. Such big college town too. Still have a lot of friends there. Oh no gotta call DJ Drama (another CAU alumnist) Shoot as a matter of fact i gotta couple young folks in school down there!

Did you know a Young Black Man won the Powerball?

Hes the Youngest Person to ever win the Powerball!!

Ok so not recently, it was a year ago, but still....who knew!?!?!? Jay Vargas was 20 when he won $17 Million dollars! And no hes not spending it all on cars and houses (his words). He actually is producing his own TV show! I know!!!! Well there are naked chicks involved, but this time it actually makes a little sense (if that makes sense lol)? Anyway, found this story in USA Today

Monday, September 21, 2009

Soooo the next time somebody tries to tell you Rhianna cant sing

just be quiet and say..."youre right"! lol

Man I suck lol

I guess every since the bad news dropped, I havent been in a blogging mood. I apologize for that. It took me a few weeks to realize, lol, but its was truly an honor to be in the running for the DC gig and hey maybe everyone is right when they say that something better is meant for me. Plus there has been so much that I've wanted to share your and my thoughts on! And after all, everything truly happens for a reason soooo.... Movin on! And how about last week alone!?!?!? Im still catchin up! So mad I missed my cousin Whitney and my auntie Oprah last week! (even though I got more Whitney's in my family then Oprahs lol)

So if youre like me... lets catch up.....

And how come I didnt know about Mariah!?!?!? Yo and this was one of my favorite 80's songs!!! I wanna know what love isssssssss

But off to more importan things like my girl Nancy Pelosi is in Philly today...Biggups to Nancy for those looks she was giving Congess as the ignorance spewed toward MY President! Classic..

I guess you need reminders every once and again about how people REALLY think. Ive never seen such disrespect toward a President from Congress....not surprised though

And then there was Kanye...man he makes life as a Kanye fan hard, lol...dont he? Now how am I supposed to defend this? lol

Well luckily I dont have to because less then 24 hours later...Kanye appears..

Which by the way shout out to Simone who had me missing the premiere of the Jay Leno show because she argued us down that ABC wouldnt show "Dreamgirls" if NBC was showig Leno! WRONG SIMONE WRONG! Thank the Lord for HULU

Oh and speaking of "Dreamgirls", one of the ORIGINAL "Dreamgirs", Mrs. Sheryl Lee Ralph (Hughes) is throwing a really cool and classy event thats also serving as a fundraiser for Senator Hughes' campaign. I usually dont use this blog to promote politics, but Senator Huges and Ms Sheryl have been on the frontlines and planning for some really great community events that I have been a part of. Their commitment to HIV/AIDS awareness and testing is far beyond any other political couple in Philadelphia and is truly important and personal to me. So if you are an independent woman that has a few dollars to spend for more then a few great causes, here are the details!
PS
There wil be food, Salsa lessons, massages and some good girlfriends...

Speaking of Salsa, how about "Dancing With The Stars" premieres TONIGHT!??!?! And yes Im not afraid to say I am excited. Eventhough I should probably protest for what they did to Lil Kim last season! But Im moving on because I have got to see what hey put Macy Grey in!! And how Kelly Osborne starts melting off the pounds! Do it girl! Oh and I forgot about my girl and Spike Lee movie vet, Debi Mazar...oh and Mya. Cant wait to see how she's gonna try to put Tap Dance to a Salsa lol..Cuz you know she will lol...
